OUR PLAY BEGINS!

Highland third graders are excited about the opportunity to present the musical Pirates of Grammar Island. This musical from Bad Wolf Press powerfully stresses language in new ways. The kids are loving the music!! You should hear them singing around home. :0) From now until the week before Christmas break students will be learning the music and practicing the dialogue. Performances will be during the last week before break, December 17th-22nd. This schedule will be posted later. Several parents have expressed interest in participating in a number of ways, such as practicing parts, planning costumes, or painting a mural for our set. Mrs. Julia Standish has agreed to help me organize our event. We intend to keep everything simple and fun for the kids. If you would like to help in some way, please contact me. Thank you for your support and interest in our project! Mrs. Doretta Lambert

Here we are!

Mrs. Lambert's Third Graders

Welcome to Third Grade, Miss Stump!

We are excited to have Miss Micaela Stump join us as she completes her Junior Field experience through Montana State University. Third graders are enjoying working with her Monday through Wednesday. This week she taught a lesson on the basics of books, such as cover, title page, and dedication page. Students made their own books, expanding on their names and how to leave the world a better place. Miss Stump is a very capable teacher who will begin her student teaching in January.

Welcome to our classroom, Miss Stump!

AR Update

Parents, I intend to use this blog to write to you several times a month. Thank you for checking this blog often.

Many of you have expressed confusion on AR testing. Let me try to clear up any lingering questions.

    • First, your child will be checking out three books each Monday from our library. Two books are be AR books. One book is "free choice." All students are required to read 30 minutes at home each day. I have provided students with a blue AR folder containing a reading log. This will be our way as communicating together, teacher to parent and parent to teacher.
    • I require the students to check out AR books on their reading level. Tests on books above or below their level will not be accepted. Check the AR bookmark given to your child at the beginning of each quarter for your child's reading level.
    • A list of Highland's AR books can be found under "Explore Reading" on our web page. Books not on the list do not have tests at Highland Elementary.
    • Please help your child to log the books being read at home. In the last two columns I initial and mark the number of points awarded.
    • Testing is completed at school only. Passing scores are 70% and above. When students fail a test, a second test may be taken the following day. This will be the last chance given for passing this test.
    • Points rewarded are based on the number of accurate answers and are computer-generated.
    • Students must hand in their logs for my initials. If your child's log is not initialed, he/she did not hand it in for my initials. I will not be able to monitor this for you, unless your child takes the responsibility of handing it in to me.

I appreciate your help in getting your child "on track."

Thank you!

Mrs. Lambert :0)

The First Week of School!

The third graders are "flying high" at Highland. Our school year begins with learning rules and procedures. Practicing drills will have us ready and prepared for anything. Class rules are based on
Character Counts. Next week students will begin their spelling words. Expect to see the list come home beginning Tuesday. Lists will be available on the website, too. On Friday students took a pretest in math. The first unit stresses counting money, making change, and place value. Numbers will also be compared, ordered and rounded. Take some time to check out our webpage's "Explore Math." There are some fantastic sites for additional practice. We hope you enjoyed the Open House/Ice Cream Social. We stayed very busy preparing for your visit. "Interest Posters" and "Student Art with Name Poetry" were on display.

Check our blog often. Updates will be made weekly or biweekly.

Thank you for stopping by today...
